Retelling: The Power of Sorcery

For my retelling, I have come up with the possible idea to use Glinda’s sorcery powers to create a “switch” between her and Elphaba. In the novel, we learn that sorcery “doesn’t rend, it repairs. It is synthesis rather than analysis. It builds anew rather than revealing the old… It doesn’t pose or represent the world. It becomes.” (p.143) I want to use the “thread” that Glinda’s power lies in sorcery to have Glinda accidentally cause herself to have Elphaba’s outer appearance, while still being herself. Ultimately, Glinda will still be herself on the inside, but she will be in Elphaba’s body, and vice versa. This will help develop the theme that a person does not truly understand what it is like to be someone until he or she is in that person’s shoes… literally. My curiosity lies in what Glinda would do if she were still herself but treated the way Elphaba is treated by others. On page 143, Nessarose explains that sorcery is about “reconstructing your character,” which I will try to take to new heights. Also, on page 86, Galinda tries to identify with Elphaba by saying that “it’s just possible that she didn’t like being recognized on account of her skin color.”  I am not sure what spell I will have Glinda trying to attempt at first, but I do think that by putting Glinda in Elphaba’s body it will develop a story that only raises a very powerful theme, that people are not always what they seem on the outside and that we must always show respect and compassion to others. Hopefully in my story, Glinda will realize just how difficult it is to be Elphaba, while Elphaba herself gets a taste of the glorious life Glinda leads. In doing so, she will learn more about Glinda’s hidden insecurities as well.  I always wondered what people would think if Elphaba’s skin color were to be reversed, and how each character would react to the change.
